Telemann was a contemporary of J.S. Bach and wrote a massive 1034 cantatas. They include the 3 complete year cycles of the Harmonische Gottes-Dienst (Harmonious Divine Worship).
Unlike Bach’s cantatas, these are intimate short pieces for a single voice, one instrument and continuo. They were apparently intended for private rather than church use, and musically uncomplicated.
Together with baritone Klaus Mertens and Ingrid Schmithüsen Il Concertino Köln recorded a selection of 12 cantatas from the first two volumes of Telemann’s cycles. These were written for some of the feasts of the liturgical year. This part of Telemann’s repertoire is rarely performed let alone recorded.
