About this release
John Cage was one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century with a highly original approach to music.
Oriental influences and a lack of harmonic progress are main features of this music. As are rhythmic regularity and a lack of tension.
Remarkably the pieces cover a relatively short period of time: 1940-1951. After this Cage moved on to different means of expression including both conventional ensembles and forms and certainly at the time unconventional materials like plants, telephones and taped music.
This set offers an opportunity to (re)discover one of the pioneers of 20th-century music. Cage was definitely an avant-garde composer, but especially this repertoire for prepared piano proves to be unexpectedly accessible.
